Shed hunting is the sport in which people search for the antlers that deer, moose, and elk have dropped. This usually starts in early spring and continues through until the early part of summer. There are many ways to go about finding shed antlers. The most common way to start, is to find the animals in their pre-dropped stage. Such places can be feeding areas, bedding areas, and well traveled areas. Continue to check these areas as persistence will pay off.
Shed hunting is becoming a very popular sport. The arrival of the World Wide Web has increased exposure of the sport. There are many websites now totally dedicated to the sport of shed hunting. We here at Sheds and Arrowheads strive to be the premier shed hunting site on the net.
Shed Hunting in National and Provincial Parks:
|
National and provincial parks preserve natural areas and protect their ecological integrity for future generations. While visiting these parks, it is not uncommon to come across naturally shed antlers from moose, elk, and deer. In most states and provinces, it is unlawful to possess or remove shed antlers from national and provincial parks. Please respect the policies in effect to insure the long term viability of these parks. If you have any questions pertaining to the removal of shed antlers from a national or provincial park, contact your local parks service.

Respect Our Environment:
You can help to take care of our environment and have continued landowner support for years by taking some of the following actions:
- Don't Litter... take along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting your trash so that you can deposit it in the proper trash receptacle. Contain your waste instead of depositing it into the environment.
- Make sure to gain permission before accessing land. Talk to landowners before attempting to look for antlers. Most landowners will have no problem allowing foot access. It only takes a moment to ask and dividends could pay off for you.
- If operating an OHV, please ensure to stick to traveled trails. Don't destroy valuable habitat.
Safety While Shed Hunting:
- If you plan on being out in the field for an extended amount of time, bring along extra safety items such as water, flashlights, maps, survival kit, and a cell phone or radio
- Have good quality gear. Good hiking boots, warm gear (gloves, socks, and toques), gps and/or compass (if possible), all make the shed hunting experience easier and much more enjoyable.
- Do not shed hunt on land you do not have access to.
- Obey any speed limits or rules in effect in the areas you are accessing.
